Tips for Managing Your Password
Choose a strong password:
- Avoid using dictionary words, names, or birthdates
- Avoid reusing passwords from other accounts
- Use a password manager (1Password, Bitwarden, KeePass) to store it securely
Update all devices at once:
- After changing your password, reconnect all your devices (phone, tablet, desktop) within a few minutes to avoid service interruptions
- If you forget to update one device, you'll see connection errors until you do
Don't share your password:
- Never give your email password to anyone, including customer support (legitimate support staff will never ask for it)
- If someone has your password, change it immediately and review your recent account activity
Enable two-factor authentication (if available):
- Contact your email provider to enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for extra security
- With 2FA, even if someone knows your password, they can't log in without a verification code
Password reset options:
- If you forget your new password, contact your email provider
- Recovery email or phone number options may be available depending on your account setup
Troubleshooting
Devices still showing wrong password errors after reconnecting:
- Verify you typed the password correctly (passwords are case-sensitive)
- Wait 2–5 minutes for the server to fully process the password change
- Force-close the email app and reopen it
- Remove the account entirely and re-add it with the new password
Locked out of your account:
- If you change your password multiple times in quick succession, your account may be temporarily locked
- Wait 15 minutes, then try logging in again
- Contact your email provider if the account remains locked
Webmail login works but IMAP/POP3 devices don't:
- Confirm you're using IMAP or POP3 (not HTTPS webmail)—some providers require different app passwords
- Ask your provider if they use app-specific passwords for security (different from your webmail password)
If you continue experiencing issues, contact your email provider—they can verify your account status and help you reconnect.
