Transfer a domain to us

Move your existing domain from another registrar to your hosting account in a few simple steps.

Updated

If you already own a domain registered elsewhere, you can transfer it to us. The process is straightforward and typically takes 3–5 business days.

Step 1: Ensure your domain is eligible for transfer

Your domain must meet these requirements:

  • Registered for at least 60 days — newly registered domains often have a lock period
  • Not expired — transfers are blocked if the domain has expired
  • Not locked — ask your current registrar to unlock it
  • Has an active registrant — the domain owner must authorize the transfer

Check with your current registrar's control panel if you're unsure about any of these.

Step 2: Get your EPP code (transfer authorization code)

An EPP code (also called a transfer code or auth code) is required to initiate the transfer. This is a unique code provided by your current registrar as proof you own the domain.

  1. Log in to your current registrar's account
  2. Locate your domain and request an EPP code or unlock code
  3. They'll email it to you (usually within a few minutes)
  4. Keep this code handy — you'll need it during the transfer

For more details, see Get your EPP/transfer code and enable domain privacy.

Step 3: Initiate the transfer in your client portal

  1. Log into your client portal
  2. Navigate to Domains and select Transfer Domain
  3. Enter your domain name (e.g. yourdomain.com)
  4. Paste the EPP code you received from your current registrar
  5. Choose your registration period (at least 1 year)
  6. Review the transfer fee (if any) and proceed to checkout

Step 4: Verify and authorize the transfer

Once you've initiated the transfer:

  1. Check your email — your current registrar may send a confirmation request
  2. Approve if needed — some registrars require you to confirm the transfer authorization
  3. Monitor progress — the transfer typically completes in 3–5 business days

During the transfer window, your domain remains active and your website continues to work.

Step 5: Update your DNS records (if needed)

If you're also moving your hosting to us:

  1. Once the transfer completes, add your domain to your hosting account
  2. Point your domain's nameservers to us (see Point your domain at your hosting)
  3. If your site was already hosted with us, your DNS records will be in place automatically

If you're keeping your website hosted elsewhere, make no DNS changes—your domain will continue to point to your existing host.

Step 6: Confirm the transfer is complete

Once transferred, you'll see:

  • Your domain listed in your client portal
  • Your new renewal date (extended by the transfer period)
  • Access to manage DNS, privacy settings, and auto-renewal

Important notes

  • No downtime — your site remains online throughout the transfer
  • Domain is locked after transfer — you can manage this in your portal settings
  • Auto-renewal — enable it to avoid accidental expiry
  • Keep registrant details current — critical notices go to your registrant email

Troubleshooting

Transfer stuck or rejected?
- Verify the EPP code is correct (copy/paste, watch for spaces)
- Check that your domain isn't still locked at the old registrar
- Ensure the registrant email is valid and monitored

Old registrar rejected the transfer?
- They may require you to approve it directly—check your email for a confirmation message
- Some registrars have additional security holds you need to release
