Register a domain name

Step-by-step guide to registering a new domain name, choosing an extension, and completing the registration process.

Updated

Registering a domain name is the first step to getting your website online. Here's how to register a new domain through your client portal.

Step 1: Choose your domain name

The domain name is the address visitors type to reach your site—for example, yourdomain.com. Keep it:

  • Memorable — short, easy to spell
  • Relevant — reflects your business or content
  • Available — not already registered by someone else

Step 2: Check availability and select an extension

Decide which top-level domain (TLD) extension suits your needs:

  • .com — most common, suitable for any business
  • .co.uk, .com.au, .ca — country-specific (preferred if targeting that region)
  • .net, .org — alternative generic extensions
  • .io, .app, .dev — trendy tech-focused extensions
  • Many others available depending on your use case

In your client portal, search for your chosen name (e.g. yourdomain.com). The system will show availability and pricing for each extension.

Step 3: Add to cart and proceed to checkout

Once you've selected an available domain:

  1. Click Register or Add to Cart
  2. Choose your registration period (typically 1–10 years)
  3. Proceed to checkout
  4. Review your billing address and payment method

Step 4: Provide registrant information

During checkout, you'll enter the domain registrant details:

  • Registrant name — the person or business owning the domain
  • Email address — contact email for the registrant
  • Phone — registrant's phone number
  • Address — full postal address for the registrant

For privacy, most registrars offer Domain Privacy (also called WHOIS Privacy), which hides your personal information from public WHOIS lookups. You can enable this during registration or add it later.

Step 5: Complete payment

Select your payment method and complete the transaction. You'll receive a confirmation email with:

  • Domain registration details
  • Registrant credentials
  • Next renewal date

Step 6: Access your domain settings

Once registered, your domain appears in your client portal under Domains. From there you can:

  • View registration and expiry details
  • Configure DNS records
  • Enable auto-renewal
  • Update registrant or privacy settings
  • Set up email forwarding (if applicable)

Tips

  • Register for multiple years — locking in a longer term can be more cost-effective and ensures you don't accidentally lose the domain
  • Enable auto-renewal — prevents accidental expiry and ensures your site stays online
  • Use Domain Privacy if you value privacy — keeps your personal details out of public WHOIS databases
  • Keep your registrant email current — critical renewal and expiry notices arrive there

Your new domain is now ready. To point it at your hosting, see Point your domain at your hosting.
